2020 - Teamsters Canada Foundation Gives $10,000 to two Ontario Food Banks

Teamsters Canada Foundation Gives $10,000 to two Ontario Food Banks.

Toronto – The Teamsters Canada Foundation donated $5,000 to Daily Bread Food Bank and $5,000 to Hamilton Food Share earlier this summer.

Canada’s food banks have seen a huge surge in demand due to the pandemic and its economic implications. Even as provinces begin to reopen, unemployment remains high and food banks need help.

Daily Bread Food Bank supplies food to nearly 200 food programs in Toronto. It is one of the largest food banks in the country, responsible for feeding many thousands of low-income people each year. Its research and advocacy have led Daily Bread to become a leader on issues about hunger, life on low income, housing, and income security.

Hamilton Food Share is the hub of the Emergency Food Network within Hamilton, raising food and funds for emergency food programs including food banks and hot meal programs in neighbourhoods across the city. Last year, it raised and distributed over 3.35 million pounds of nutritionally rich foods to help ensure that people living in poverty have access to healthy food for themselves and their families.

“This pandemic is an opportunity to go above and beyond and to lend a hand to those in need,” explained the president of Teamsters Ontario Joint Council 52 and Local Union 938, Craig McInnes. “Daily Bread and Hamilton Food Share are two of the institutions we believe that could support the most families with the greatest needs.”

The Teamsters Canada Foundation has donated $300,000 to several charities across the country.

“Canadians are showing remarkable solidarity and generosity,” said François Laporte, chairman of the Teamsters Canada Foundation and president of Teamsters Canada. “We have a duty to act when we can help our fellow citizens, and that’s what we’re doing alongside all our partners across Canada.”

Funds raised by the Teamsters Canada Foundation through its charitable activities come from private donations, not from the dues of Teamster members. The Canada Revenue Agency also requires that foundations donate funds directly to charitable organizations rather than individuals.

The mission of the Teamsters Canada Foundation is to help the most vulnerable of our society through charities present in Canadian communities. The Foundation also supports workers who want to improve their lives by retraining or by taking courses to change or advance their career.
