2020 - Teamsters Canada Foundation donates $30,000 to BC charities

Teamsters Canada Foundation donates $30,000 to BC charities

Vancouver, June 9, 2020 — The Teamsters Canada Foundation is donating $30,000 to three British Columbia charities: the Potluck Café Society, Quest Outreach Society and Union Gospel Mission.

Potluck Café Society transforms lives by creating jobs and providing healthy food for people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Quest Food Exchange is a non-profit organization that provides varied affordable and healthy foods to Canadians facing food insecurity.

Union Gospel Mission offers meals, education, shelter, safe and affordable housing, drug and alcohol recovery programs, and support services to those struggling with homelessness and addiction in Metro Vancouver and the city of Mission.

“The federal and British Columbia governments have implemented several programs to help the vulnerable and powerless in our society,” said Stan Hennessy, President of Joint Council 36 (British Columbia) and International Vice-President of Teamsters Canada. “But we, in the Teamsters Union, feel we should be doing more, and that’s why the Foundation has decided to support these three charities.”

The Teamsters Canada Foundation has pledged its support to several charitable organizations across the country, with donations totalling $300,000.

“Canadians are showing remarkable solidarity and generosity,” said François Laporte, Chairman of the Teamsters Canada Foundation and President of Teamsters Canada. “We have a duty to act when we can help our fellow citizens, and that’s what we’re doing alongside all our partners across Canada.”

Funds raised by the Teamsters Canada Foundation through its charitable activities come from private donations, not from the dues of Teamsters members. The Canada Revenue Agency also requires that foundations donate funds directly to charitable organizations rather than individuals.

The mission of the Teamsters Canada Foundation is to help the most vulnerable of our society through charities present in Canadian communities. The Foundation also supports workers who want to improve their lives by retraining or by taking courses to change or advance their career.
